I’m Bex, the potter behind Throw to Fire.

I started making pottery in 2016, initially as a hobby alongside my job as a science teacher. I quickly fell in love with the process of working with clay and the freedom it gave me to create. What started as a hobby gradually grew into something I wanted to pursue further.

Throw to Fire started in the spare room of my first-floor flat and, a few years later, I left teaching to make pottery full time. I now work from my garden studio in Brighton, where I spend most of my time making, packing orders and trying to keep on top of all the other things that come with running a small business.

My work is heavily influenced by my love of simple, contemporary design. I like clean lines and details that make a piece feel considered without being too fussy.

Colour is a big part of my work too, although I’m not particularly fond of glazing. Instead, I mix coloured clays by hand and use them to create the soft palette of pinks, mauves, greens and greys that has become a big part of the Throw to Fire aesthetic.

Because the colour runs all the way through the clay, I can leave much of the outside of my pots unglazed. I love the contrast between the tactile, matt exterior and the glossy glazed interior – and, if I’m honest, it also means I get to avoid glazing as much as possible.

I make functional ceramics for everyday life: mugs for your morning coffee, vases for flowers from the garden, oil burners for adding to your home’s ambience.

These days, making pottery is only part of what I do. I also teach other potters about the business side of being a creative, everything I wish I’d known when I first started selling my work.
