Lessons

We offer private pottery lessons from our garden studio in Brighton – a small, calm space to learn the basics of wheel throwing.

These sessions are designed to be relaxed and hands-on. Whether you’ve never touched clay before or just want to spend a couple of hours doing something different, you’ll be guided through the process step by step.

Working on the wheel is one of those things that looks easy… and then you try it. But that’s part of the fun!

So what is wheel throwing?

Have you ever seen Ghost? – that is usually the first thing that people think of!

In a private lesson you will learn the basic techniques of throwing pots; centring, opening and pulling walls, to create simple bowls and cups. When the clay is dried to a leather hard stage, the piece is placed back on the wheel and the shape is refined (or ‘turned’) using carving tools – this can be done by you in a follow-up lesson or we can do it for you. It is then left to dry completely, before undergoing its first firing in the kiln to approximately 1000C (the bisque firing). Next a coat of glaze is applied and then it undergoes its second firing in the kiln to approximately 1230C (the glaze firing).

What to Expect

Lessons are private for one or two people. As there is one pottery wheel, you’ll take turns using it. Most pairs will have two turns each on the wheel, depending on time.

All materials, glazing, and firing are included, so you don’t need to bring anything – just turn up and have a go.

When Do Lessons Run?

Lessons run during the week from our Brighton studio.

We offer sessions on Wednesday evenings (6–8pm), as well as Thursday and Friday mornings (10–12) and afternoons (2–4).

Unfortunately, we do not offer sessions on weekends.

New dates are released on the 1st of each month for the following month (for example, on 1st May, June bookings will be released).
